Selecting a dissertation topic is one of the most challenging parts of the dissertation process for doctoral students. Many students struggle choosing an idea of what they want to do their research on is majority of the time based on the student’s own interest and passion. When I selected my topic, it was based on my career in the education field . However, dissertation topics must emerge from a gap, need, or tension in the empirical research literature, not from a personal experience or try to solve a personal problem. Finding a research topic involves looks at various types of literature, while selecting a research topic involves identifying the most critical factors and weighing their importance against the large quantity of choices available ( Lei, 2009). The reliance on literature helps researcher’s support their dissertation topics with evidence that makes it no bias due to the researcher’s own personal experience.
