The given context revolves around dealing with an employee who has just parted ways with his fiancée, and the situation would be handled from the perspective of a middle manager who is managing a firm of 150 employees. There is already an existing problem of errors in programming from that employee. Therefore, the situation should involve dealing with compassion, responsibility, and accountability. The Christian principles can further be incorporated in this situation. The principle depicts that all the children of God should be cared for with utmost compassion, empathy, and patience (Wessel, 2020). According to that principle, it is important to show humanity and empathy to people in need. The Bible further instructs that according to the law of Jesus, everyone should carry the burden of each other. Apart from that, the process further influences to show empathy and compassion to the people during their adverse or struggling time.
According to this principle, the employee should be confronted with a discussion where he can feel comfortable sharing his emotions and feelings. Apart from that, the feelings should be acknowledged and validated to make the person feel better. Empathy from the leader or manager can improve the mental state and well-being of the employees (Arghode et al., 2022). The words of empathy, such as “I empathize with your loss and hard time. However, there are some incidents which are inevitable, and time will eventually heal you”.
Such words can develop the trust and reliability of the employee in the manager. James 2:15-16 “Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed (James 2:15-16 Bible Gateway (NIV), n.d.)”. These verses further denote that practical help should also be offered to the people along with emotional help. It further shows that the lack of absence of food and clothing cannot be dealt with the empathy and statements of kindness. It should be dealt with by actually offering practical help to those poor people, such as clothing, food shelter, and so on. In this context, the resources can be either mental health counseling sessions or mindfulness training. Psychological counseling, mindfulness, and meditation can help a person deal with depression and anxiety (Hilton et al., 2019). It would help if you also assured that employee that you would allow him some time to eventually get back to normalcy, where he would be fulfilling his job responsibilities.
In the next stage, the performance expectations should be communicated with the employee in a sensitive and understanding approach. It should be highlighted in an honest yet polite manner that the employee has started making errors in his work, and it has been induced by his psychological distress, which is affecting his professional integrity negatively. During this time, the past performances of the employees should be acknowledged, and the employees should not feel pressured to perform better. You should also extend your help to him to come out of such a situation as soon as possible. Collaboration between the manager and the leader can influence the employee positively (Nikolova et al., 2019).
Other plans regarding work should be made. For example, the workload of the employee should be adjusted according to his current capability, and additional support can be added. A work-from-home or hybrid working facility should also be offered. The work-from-home or flexible working schedule helps employees spend quality time with family and also assists with the expense of childcare for those with smaller children. This can also have a positive impact on an employee\’s emotional well-being.
