1. Your assignment is to check a dietary supplement label (either in your home or at a
store). Write a short paragraph about what you discovered after reviewing the US
Pharmacopeia website. Did your supplement have USP verification? How will this
affect how/if you buy dietary supplements?
2. Look at a food label from a food in your kitchen: list the food, serving size, calories
per serving, grams of carbohydrate, fiber and sugars. Any surprises?
3. Do you normally use sugar substitutes? If yes, what and why? If no, why not?
4. The sweetness of soda: this will help you understand the amount of sugar found in
a can of soda. Take a glass and fill it with 12 ounces (1-1/2 cups water). Using a
measuring spoon, add 10 to 12 level teaspoons of sugar, stir until it is dissolved. Take
a sip, did it taste as sweet as a soda? You can try this with friends and/or family
members. Please share all the reactions/comments with your classmates.
