My personal favorite visual illusion to share with people is the “spinning dancer” by Nobuyuki Kayahara, a Japanese web designer. This illusion is a reversible image showing a silhouette of a dancer spinning either to the left or to the right and was rumored to be a personality test to determine which side of your brain you use (it is not). Not only can it vary between individuals, but the shape can switch direction whether you stare at it directly or after looking away. The illusion is formed by bistable perception which is when the brain tries to process the entire image including the missing parts of the silhouette and makes a “guess” on which direction is perceived.
