I feel that this could be used to establish and maintain therapeutic relationships because they would then feel seen, and probably see that you are attempting to understand, or be empathic toward them.”
I find that when you do invest the time to learn about the cultural practices of your client, you can strengthen the therapeutic alliance. I would see this quite a bit in the cancer center when I worked with cancer patients. We served a multicultural population- so when it came to end of life care, culture played a huge role in how to serve clients.
I remember one Hindu client I worked with- and the importance of having fresh flowers in the room when death was approaching.
We can’t possible know about all of the cultural practices, but we can ask our clients and do research when we are serving someone who is different than us.
