Connecting With a Client: Self-Disclosure and Cultural Competence
Assignment:2 Connecting With a Client: Self-Disclosure and Cultural Competence
Imagine a scenario in which a good friend is going through a tough time. Perhaps they discuss a mental health issue, substance use, or a death in the family. You might, as a friend, respond empathetically by mentioning a similar experience you had and what you learned or how you got through it. This sharing of stories builds connection.
Indeed, humans are social creatures who yearn to connect with others. And social work is, to a great extent, a profession of connection. But how might this same situation play out in the context of the client-social worker alliance?
Social workers strive to be objective and to be aware of the potential consequences of self-disclosure before engaging in it. They also cultivate self-awareness of their own lived experiences, biases, and beliefs related to diverse cultures. Connecting with a client includes learning about their culture, remaining humble and inquisitive, and always considering cultural factors during assessment and intervention.
In this Assignment, you reflect on your professional experience with two actions associated with connecting with a client: self-disclosure and cultural competence.
To Prepare
- Review the Learning Resources on self-disclosure and cultural competence.
- Reflect on a client interaction in field experience or in professional life when you made the decision to self-disclose or not.
- Reflect on a client interaction in field experience or in professional life when you demonstrated cultural competence—namely, an awareness of your own biases, a humble and inquisitive disposition relating to cultures other than your own, or an approach that took into account the client’s cultural values and beliefs.
