  1. List three (3) substantive[1] differences between the screen play and the written play.

Within the written play, the part about girls dancing in the woods is portrayed as a flashback thus creating the assertion that it did not take place within the story. In the screen play, the girls dancing was an opening scene for the play and comprised all the details stipulated in the written play as a flash back.

Within the written play, Rev. Parris talks about Rev. Hale to the people about his coming to town while in Betty’s bedroom. In the screen play, Rev. Parris takes center stage in the church while preaching to tell the people.

In the written play, Tituba is just being asked questions normally, however in the screen play she is beaten up so that she can talk.

Hale’s wife was not mentioned within the written play

[1] Substantive means significant—not simply that the dialog has been slightly changed in places, but that a significant dialog change has occurred between the text and the film, and state what the change is and why it is significant……………………….
