1) Comparison procedures can be used easily to help solve crimes. What I mean when I say this is that the investigators could use the strategies that they used to solve a previous crime scene to help them solve the current one. Forensic laboratories are negatively affected by various limitations, in personnel, technology, amount and timing of testing, and the ability to store and track evidence.
Forensic science is used to form a case but itself can not build a whole case. All forensic evidence is divided into two classes; class evidence and individual evidence. For example, blood is considered class evidence because although it can be used to see what type of blood that an individual has, it can not directly pin point one person. DNA is an example of individual evidence. Over time, DNA degrades, which causes the scientist to often make mistakes. Most of the time DNA is used to rule someone out other than confirming a person. The final determination about whether a DNA profile matches that of a suspect is subject to interpretation.
Therefore, this all means that forensic analysis can lead to a conclusion about how the crime was committed and what actually happened, but not pin point a suspect.
2)Greeting class, there was a case in which a young lady was taken to a empty field and shot three times while bound with duck tape. An investigations was conducted and information was gathered and a suspect was located. Even with the information the investigators had they still needed more evidence to make a solid case. The residence of the suspect was searched and a 9mm handgun was located which was the same caliber shell casing that was found at the scene of the crime. A ballistic comparison was done which resulted in a match between the gun and the bullets. The suspect later plead guilty to the murder.
There are several limitations in regards to comparative disciplines. For example, time is a factor when testing or comparing certain evidence. If its tested in a timely mater it can evaporate, become contaminated or deteriorate. Several years ago we didn’t have the technology that we have now which caused a lot of cases to be unsolved due to certain comparisons could not be conducted
