I could not find any information about if the juvenile court was in the same location as the state trial court in Oregon. From what I could tell, this varies from county to county in Oregon. If the county is rural, the cases are heard in the same courthouse, however, in the metropolitan area, they have a separate building. I think that this has to do with the space available. The juvenile court hearings and the adult court hearings i either case are held separately. I think that this is due to the privacy matters concerning minors.
I think that it is in the better interest of the juvenile if the proceedings are held separate because of the privacy of the juvenile. In an adult court, it is open to the public, and I feel that is not appropriate for minors.
If I could change something about the juvenile courts it would be to add more transition programs for the ones that have been in lockup for any amount of time. These programs are meant to help the individual integrate back into the community and I feel are an essential tool in preventing recidivism, along with aiding in the recovery of institutionalization. These programs also help the child to earn life skills, like getting jobs, their G.E.D, and helping them with getting their identifications and other documents that they will need. These programs provide a supervised environment while giving them the freedom needed to work and rejoin their community.

Children under 18 are charged differently than adults. The goal however is still the same. Much like adults, juvenile’s have underline concerns and conducts that the Juvenile Court of Maryland targets while protecting the community all at the same time. Youths may be sent to the Department of Juvenile Services where they can receive treatment and counseling depending on the case. Many youths have turned to drugs and alcohol to become their safety net. Some are being abused and many have to survive on their own because parents and other around them have influenced them to do the same. If a child then becomes a multiple offender, the states attorney will file a petition in Juvenile court alleging that the child is a delinquent.
The Maryland Court System has four levels. Two trial courts and two appelatte courts. At each stage of the case a child and or the parent has the right to have a lawyer present. An Adjudicatory hearing is the trial on the charges against the youth. However there are no juries in the court room at the time. In fact the case files anf records are also confidental and can’t be viewed unless authorized by the courts. I believe no one is allowed in the court room due to the protection of the child. A child’s case is very sensitive and could fall into the hands of the wrong person. One thing I would love to see change is more dedication from social workers and counselors that the courts appoint to the youth to keep them from becoming repeated offenders.
