Assignment: Based on the information in Chapter 6, recall a recent (within last 3-9 months) interpersonal conflict with a friend, family member, loved one, or colleague/co-worker – it has to be someone you know and with whom you have an established relationship (not a random Starbucks barista that spelled your name wrong on the cup and put soy milk in your latte instead of oat milk). Tell me the following by using complete sentences and smooth transitions:
Who was the conflict with?
When did it occur?
What were the circumstances (briefly, but specific and descriptive enough)?
Overall, how did you manage the conflict (competing, avoiding, accommodating, compromising, and/or collaborating)?
What was the result? Was it a win-win, lose-lose, lose-win, or win-lose situation? Or is it still going on?
Using the text to support or help formulate your response, what did you manage well in the conflict and what do you think you could manage better for the next time you face a similar argument?
The goal here is to get you to think critically about how you manage conflict. This is not just answer the questions and be done. Tell me why you think you managed the conflict the way you did using the terminology – why you thought it was competing or any of the others listed. Tell me why you thought it was win-lose. Tell me how things are going to be different, if necessary, in the future based on this exercise.
