Discussion 1: Standards

The state content standard I am looking at is the Virginia standard K.7 The student will expand vocabulary and use of word meanings. More specifically the sub-category of K.7 f.) Use nouns to identify and name people, places, and things.

The National Content Standard that most relates to this state standard is: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.B: Use frequently occurring nouns and verbs.

How are they similar and different?

They are similar because they both address using nouns and are in language arts and literacy. They are different in three ways; 1.) the state standard addresses using nouns to identify and name people, places, and things; 2.) the national standards refers to nouns and verbs; 3.) the state standard uses the word identifyand the national standard uses the word use.

What are the important nouns and verbs in the standard you have selected?

    • Nouns: nouns, people, places, things
    • Verbs: use, identify

What would you expect the students to be able to do, based on the verb?

I would expect students to use words to describe or name people, places, feelings, and things, use size, shape, color, and spatial words to describe people, places, and things, and identify real-life connections between words and their use.

What would the students need to know for them to do what you expect?

Students would need to understand that vocabulary is made up of words and that words have meaning, that learning new words enhances communication, and that word choice makes communication clearer.

How would they transfer what they learned into real-world application of their new knowledge and skills?

By being able to identify people places, and things as nouns and understand actions as verbs, they are increasing their oral communication skills which are important as they progress through life.

Standards

The national standard I chose to investigate is from the National Council of Teachers of English. And for the state standard Georgia Standard Frameworks for reading and language arts.

The national standard indicates “Students read a wide range of print and non-print texts to build an understanding of texts, of themselves, and of cultures in the United States and the world”(NCTE,1996).

The Georgia Standard Frameworks ELAGSE8RL10 “By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems at the high end of grades 6-8 text complexity band independently and proficiently”(Georgia State DOE, 2015).

The standards are similar in that they both state students are expected to be able to read a wide range of text. A wide range to include short stories, books, dramas and poems. Students should not only be able to read but comprehend what they are reading. The difference I see in both standards is, that the national standard describes a general and broad standard. It also talks about students acquire new information to respond to the demands and needs of society and workplace (NCTE, 1996). Whereas, the state standard is more specific to the grade level of 6-8.

The important noun and verbs are read and comprehend. The students should be able to read with accuracy and proficiency to comprehend text across all genres. Students would need to able to identify context clues, themes, general settings, authors tone.
