communication competencies

Discuss the four communication competencies presented (i.e., linguistic, operational, social, & strategic) by identifying those you consider to be most difficult to assess, observe, and/or treat.
The four communication competencies presented in the PowerPoint are essential when considering the use with an AAC device. Not only is it essential to assess, observe, and/or treat the person who is using the AAC device, but also the spouse, parent, caregiver, or other communication parent who receives the messages. I feel the most difficult area to assess, observe, and/or treat is the operational competency. According to our PowerPoint, this is the aspect that is involved in operating and maintaining the AAC device. This is typically accomplished by someone other than the AAC user. These communication partners need to be able to operate and maintain the AAC device, as well as be available for instruction and training, which is an ongoing process. It is difficult to assess, observe and treat the communication partner because issues that may arise will occur out of the clinical setting. Also, I think it would be difficult to assess, observe, and treat the area of social competence. Again, social situations typically occur outside of the clinical setting. Therefore, it is difficult to assess and observe natural social situations. Consequently, it is difficult to decide if there is a need for social treatment.

The 4 communication competencies presented in the PowerPoint are important to consider when an individual begins using the AAC device. In my opinion, the strategic and social competencies would be the most challenging to asses, observe, and/or treat. Strategic competency involves learning to use AAC tools and devices strategically within the context of ongoing activities. It is needed to appropriately engage in activities along with conversations. In my opinion, this seems like a difficult task to master. I also think it would be difficult to assess, observe, and/or treat the area of social competence. Since social situations typically occur outside of the therapy room, it may be difficult to assess and observe this area.

Mumps is a contagious disease that is marked by inflammation of the salivary glands. It is spread by saliva or mucus from the mouth, nose and throat when a person sneezes or coughs. It can also be transmitted through cups used by an infected person. Typically, children who have been exposed to mumps are isolated from other children and if in school, are not permitted to return to school for a maximum of 9 days after the initial swelling. Parents should immediately be notified so they can be picked up and treated. Since mumps has an incubation period of 16-18 days and is contagious 6 days before and 9 days after the swelling occurs, it is a serious problem. According the CDC, “mumps typically starts with a few days of fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite, and is followed by swelling of salivary glands.” However, it occurs much less frequently these days because of the MMR vaccine that was created in 1967. The vaccine is given at 12-15 months, then at 4-6 years OR at 11-12 years. It is known for causing deafness, epididymitis, myocarditis, arthritis, and hepatitis.
