The editorial “Why Big Cities Thrive, and Smaller Ones Are Being Left Behind” was written by Eduardo Porter. The piece appeared in the New York Times. The editorial was published on October 10, 2017. The author’s main argument is that many small cities in America are losing too much of their population to survive for much longer. He includes the towns of Weirton, WV, and Steubenville, OH, as examples. The author points out that these manufacturing towns were negatively affected by the shift to a global economy. He mentions that they lost a significant amount of their population. The author feels people are moving to larger cities with more job opportunities and higher wages. He includes data from the Brookings Institute to prove this. He cites numerous experts. The author effectively uses ethos, pathos, and logos to argue that the future of some American small towns “looks dim.”
