Peer#1
Critical thinkers have several important traits, including the ability to evaluate information and arguments to form their own well-reasoned opinions. They also try different strategies when one solution doesn’t work and are open to learning from failure. According to OpenStax (n.d.), critical thinking is “an active, self-reflective, and deliberate attempt to utilize Cognitive skills to increase learning.” This means critical thinkers are both intentional and aware of their thought processes. One critical thinking skill I feel confident in is analyzing information and using it to form my own conclusions. I take time to understand the material before deciding what I think. However, a skill I want to improve is avoiding personal biases when solving problems. Even though I try to be self-aware, I recognize that my opinions or assumptions can sometimes affect how I think. Becoming more objective will help me become a stronger critical thinker and learner overall.
Peer #2
Critical thinking involves analyzing information objectively to make reasoned judgments. Key characteristics of a critical thinker include open mindedness, the ability to evaluate evidence, logical reasoning, and effective communication (Facione, 2015). Open mindedness allows individuals to consider diverse viewpoints without bias, while logical reasoning ensures conclusions are based on sound evidence rather than emotions.
One critical thinking skill I feel confident in is evaluating evidence. I can assess sources for credibility and relevance, which helps me make informed decisions. I would like to improve my open mindedness. I find myself leaning too heavily on my prior knowledge, which may limit my ability to fully consider alternative perspectives.
Developing greater open mindedness will help me become a more balanced thinker and foster better collaboration in group settings. Enhancing this skill can lead to more thoughtful, inclusive decision-making (Paul & Elder, 2014).
