As a head coach you will only be as good as the talent you have on your own roster
As a head coach you will only be as good as the talent you have on your own roster. You as a coach need to understand how you want your team or unit to be built. You may have thoughts about what you want to run offensively and defensively from a scheme stand point. If the personnel unfortunately doesn’t posses the skill set needed you wont find much success trying to execute the scheme. Think of this as a marriage on one side is what you hope to do offensively or defensively. The other side of this partnership is your roster, talent pool and depth. For this partnership to work the talent pool, roster and depth must project to being able to execute your scheme at a high level.
Recruiting can be broken down into simple steps, for this assignment you will use the just the first 2 steps.
1. Identify or get eyes on athletes, observe potential prospects in various settings in an effort to assess their skill set and potential. (Games, practices, weight room)
2. Evaluate or determine if the prospect is recruitable. Ask yourself some questions, is he long enough, fast enough, does he change directions well, would you describe him as explosive, does he show a great feel or instinct for the game. Are there other intangibles that cant always be seen or measured, leadership, work ethic, character, and what did his head coach or position coach provide as their evaluation of the prospect.
Using the first 2 steps of the recruiting/scouting philosophy . You will create a scouting and evaluation chart, this assignment will require the use of Microsoft excel. You will chart or evaluate 10 prospects, assume that these prospects are the 10 difference makers your team needs in order to compete for a championship. The 10 prospects need to be from each position group. QB(1),RB(1),OL(1),WR(1),TE/FB(1),DL(1),LB(1),CB(1),SF(1),K/P(1) (10 Total evaluations)
Provided below is a example of an evaluation chart. In particular this is the evaluation of the great 2 sport athlete Bo Jackson from Auburn University (I will provide an example that you can use as a template, those well versed in using excel you can go as elaborate as you want with size and scale.)
The pool of players in which you will evaluate from will be the 2020 NFL draft prospects. All the attributes and measurables that you will need to complete this assignment can be found on the NFL draft website, combine results will provide 40 times, heights, weights and other testing results. For the section requiring your comments on what you have observed, most prospects will have a pre draft highlight tape, use search engines, YouTube etc… You are to watch a few clips of the prospect that you are evaluating. That way you can provide a valid analysis. ****In the comments put what game you observed****
Your chart must include
1. name/school
2. ht/wt
3. Current position/projected position (a player may project to another spot based on your scheme)
4. Character Assessment/background
any red flags or concerns
great in his community, active in his church, other athletic interest
married/single father
5. 40 time
6. bench press
7. broad jump
8. vertical jump
9. comments on what you observed when watching him live in person or on TV.
