Assignment Instructions: CNSL/513R: Residency Ii
Wk 1 – Counseling Session 1: Biopsychosocial Assessment [due Mon]
A biopsychosocial assessment is often the first step in treating a client. It’s an effective strategy for gathering crucial information during intake, which the counselor can then use to develop a holistic view of a client and their needs.
In this assignment, you will work with your assigned partner to role-play conducting a biopsychosocial assessment. Before completing the assignment review the following items:
“Biopsychosocial Assessment Overview”: In this video, University of Phoenix faculty member, Hayden Center will review the form and demonstrate how to complete it.
Biopsychosocial Assessment Rubric in the Grading Rubrics document: Prepare for the assignment by learning how you will be evaluated.
Microsoft® Teams™ Recording Guide: The guide includes information on how to record and upload your assignment. Recording your session will enable your instructor to view your session and provide specific feedback as needed. You and your assigned partner are responsible for ensuring your role-play is recorded and uploaded to Blackboard.
Part 1: Conduct a 30-minute role-play session in which you demonstrate and apply basic counseling skills.
Before the session, use Microsoft Teams to schedule a synchronous, virtual meeting with your partner.
You may complete this part of the assignment either Wednesday or Thursday of this week. Work with your partner to select a day and time that is convenient for both of you.
During the session, each partner will take turns playing the counselor and the client; therefore, you should schedule at least 1.5 hours to complete this activity.
When in the client role, remember to select topics that are realistic but not deeply personal. Avoid discussing issues such as substance use or trauma. Instead, select everyday concerns that are common to most people. For example, you may talk about challenges such as: procrastination, healthy living, difficult boss/employee relationships, and communication concerns with a friend.
Consult your instructor if you have concerns or questions about appropriate topics.
When in the counselor role, avoid interrogating your peer client. Remember to build rapport by applying the basic counseling skills you have acquired.
Part 2: After the session, complete the Biopsychosocial Assessment, using information obtained from your mock client. Be sure to:
Write in complete sentences (where applicable),
Edit carefully for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors,
Avoid abbreviations (ex: “tx” for “treatment”) so your thoughts are clearly articulated and can be understood easily by someone else, and
Incorporate relevant strategies or concepts from “Biopsychosocial Assessment Overview.”
Submit a link to the video of your role-play and your completed Biopsychosocial Assessment form.
