Teachers, staff, and families can help reinforce and expand students’ knowledge and skills

Because lessons do not stop when a student leaves your classroom, purposeful collaboration with other teachers, staff, and families can help reinforce and expand students’ knowledge and skills. Whenever possible, teachers should try to engage students’ families, so they can help their child develop and practice their new skills while at home.

Read the case study to inform the assignment.

Case Study: Kaylee

Grade: 7th

Age: 12

It is the beginning of the second semester, and Kaylee is having a great deal of difficulty in her math class. She understands the basic math skills but has not mastered the skills needed to move to the higher-level concepts her class is now working on. Currently, her math performance level is two years below grade level and her reading performance level is one year below grade level. Kaylee’s teacher has spoken with her parents about the possible need for additional support, and her parents have agreed to help at home.

They have identified the following critical thinking and problem-solving goals for Kaylee:

Simplify addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division expressions.

Write equations and solve word problems.

Use the “Algebra Mini-Unit Plan Template” to complete this assignment.

Part 1: Strategies

Research instructional strategies applicable to meeting Kaylee’s identified goals.

Select two instructional strategies from the list below you will use to help Kaylee meet her identified goals:

Explicitly teaching math vocabulary

Concrete-representational-abstract method

Graphic organizers

Mnemonic devices

Summarize the two instructional strategies you will be using, rationalizing their appropriateness for meeting Kaylee’s critical thinking and problem-solving goals and their ability to help engage her and increase her self-motivation to meet her goals.

Mini-Unit Plan

Design a comprehensive mathematics mini-unit plan based on the goals identified for Kaylee. Select a Grade 7 level and corresponding Arizona or other state math standard based on the Expressions and Equations domain.

Include the following in your plan:

National or state standards alignment

Academic language

Instructional strategies identified in Part 1

Sequencing of major concepts and procedures related to expressions and equations

Opportunities for active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the elementary classroom

Integration of both formative and summative assessment strategies including an accommodation for Kaylee

Home Connection

In the last section of the “Algebra Mini-Unit Plan Template,” in 250-500 words, explain how you plan to involve Kaylee’s parents in helping Kaylee meet her goals. Include a specific at-home activity that will help Kaylee practice and master her new skills and generalize learning outside of the classroom.

Support your benchmark with 2-3 resources.
