Hi Professor and class,
The Civil War was because of slavery, states’ rights and the westward expansion. The different ideas and philosophies of the people of the United States and government brought major change within these states that would affect their future and still have value today. It has value today because it shows us that depending on the choices that are made by leadership or the people, that we may return to that place of history.
We can see how the Civil War has value today in that the abolition of slavery beginning with the Emancipation Proclamation by President Lincoln on January 1, 1863. It stated, “That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” Today, the 13th Amendment abolished slavery, anyone born in the US is a citizen of the US based on the 14th Amendment which gives the right to citizenship if born in the US and the 15th Amendment, gives citizens the right to vote, all being enforced in today’s times. The Civil War was the beginning of a character change for the US and is written in history to remind us of our past and the things that the people went through to remain a union of people.
Looking at situations today we can see where we are in a form of a war between states again. Some of the people disagree of their leadership of the country and the leadership disagrees with some of the rights of the people. We have no choice to accepted the fact of who won the election of Presidency, based on the electoral college. The leadership of the US is the leadership of all its’ people. The Civil War is a true lesson of leadership and shows an example of what leadership should represent even today. We should look to our past, for direction to our future.
