America started with the phrase all men are created equal, had a Civil War about slavery, and ratified the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments between 1865 and 1870. Yet, Americas black population did not have full civil or political rights until the 1960s.

Why were the decades of the 1950s and 1960s the decades of the biggest gains for civil rights? What happened after World War II that allowed the door to be opened for the civil rights movement?
