The development and evolution of the music in Europe was greatly influenced by the Roman Catholic Church. First, Rome (Roman Empire) controlled this territory militarily and politically. Then, after the fall of the Roman Empire, the Roman Catholic Church assumed religious and political control over the same territory (starting in about 476 C.E.). The formal music created for the Church, and the music notation system developed along with it, influenced both the evolution of “classical” music, and “folk music” in Europe. Peasants served as servants in the castles (seeing and hearing secular dance music, songs, and other entertainment) and were exposed to the music of Christianity in the cathedrals, so the music they created for themselves in the villages was probably influenced by all of this.
question: If Europe was not dominated by the Roman Catholic Church during the historical period known as the Middle Ages (approx. 476 – 1425 C.E.), how do you think this might have affected the evolution of music in the region. How different might European and American music be today?
