Choose a publicly traded company and locate its 10-K report

Your reading this week states: “While ratios are an important piece of the financial puzzle, you always need to put them in context to get the complete picture” (p.163). This week, you will be asked to provide that context for a company of your choosing.

For this discussion, please choose a publicly traded company and locate its 10-K report. A 10-K is a comprehensive report filed annually by public companies about their financial performance and includes all of the financial statements we’ve covered in this course, along with a series of financial ratios with explanations from the company’s financial managers. Simply Google “(company) 10-K report” and you should be able to locate it easily.

  1. Provide one ratio for each of the primary ratio categories: profitability, leverage, liquidity, and efficiency.
  2. At face value, what does the ratio tell you about the performance of the company?
  3. Most importantly, what context needs to be considered when looking at these ratios? What broader context is not evident, or being considered? Put your financial analyst hat on and do some research – what can you uncover? Think industry comparisons or industry trends, economic conditions, etc.
  4. Is each ratio you chose a strength or weakness for the company?
