Assignment Instructions: You are a Certified medical assistant working for a primary health practitioner. A patient comes in with a chief complaint of severe right flank pain radiating to the right lower quadrant. The pain was constant and had an intensity of 10/10 on verbal analog scale. He had two episodes of emesis since its onset. He did not report experiencing any chest pain, dyspnea, fever or bowel and bladder dysfunction. Describe your expected actions and findings related to the following subjective and objective data:
Subjective: Patient states intense back pain with nausea and vomiting.
Objective: VS: HR 79, BP 165/88, O2 Sat 99% on RA (room air), Resp. 24, Temp. 98. On assessment, the patient appears to be exhibiting guarding behaviors, is restless and sweating. Lab work: Creatinine 0.87, Calcium 9.6, UA 6 rbc, UCx negative.
What disorder do you suspect the patient is suffering from?
Explain the identifying symptoms, possible causes, and common treatments.
What medications might the patient require and why?
What role would you as the medical assistant play in the care of this patient?
