Case management is one of the most rewarding and challenging jobs in all of human services. Case managers are integral members of the healthcare and human services professions providing direct care and services to those in need. Additionally, case managers are usually the first person of contact in crisis situations and when clients come into our agencies in need. The field is vast and offers a wealth of opportunities.
Why are you taking this course? What interests you about the field of case management? In my twenty years in the field, below is the main reason most case managers give for becoming case managers. Does this reason apply to you? What other reasons can you think of?
1. To help others. As a case manager you not only help people, but you may guide every aspect of their lives. Because of this, you must have a passion for helping others as the need for services may be lengthy and stressful at times.
Additionally, to be a successful case manager you must possess unique skills. Specifically, you must be adept at problem solving, be flexible, be able to work cooperatively in multidisciplinary teams, have empathy, and possess good communication skills.
Throughout this course, we will be exploring all the fun, exciting, rewarding, and sometimes stressful aspects of the profession of case management. You will see that the rewards oftentimes outweigh the challenges and the diversity and flexibility of the job can make this a great career for those looking to work in multiple fields (with adolescents, adults, seniors, mental illness etc etc).
