Option C. It is ethical to hire “third-world” labor provided only that: they are treated just as workers would be treated in the United States.

study sheet for final exam (m and w ip sections)

You will be required to answer the short-answer questions listed below, and the three essay questions listed below. Your short answers should be no more than two paragraphs each.

You should write your answers as a teacher explaining these ideas to an imaginary class of students who have not heard this material before.

I.                   short answer questions

Make sure to answer these questions on the basis of the definitions we have been using in class.

Define “propaganda advertising”, as we have used the term in class. Illustrate your explanation by using any one of the Marlboro Man print ads (i.e. a single picture ad) that you can find online. You may use one of the Marlboro ads we discussed in class. (Reminder: a propaganda advertisement has three parts: symbol, meanings, and product. Be sure your explanation shows how these three function in your chosen ad, and how the ad connects symbol and meaning to product.)

Explain the four possible ethical rules for American companies working with third-world labor, as we have discussed them in class.

Give brief explanations of each of the pressures to do the wrong thing discussed on pages 19-22 of William H. Shaw and Vincent Barry, eds., Moral Issues in Business (12th edition, paperback, 2012). Use one of the three cases of individual responsibility discussed in class to illustrate how each of these pressures can prevent a person from doing what they think is right.

Explain what integrity is, as we have defined it in class. (RYA!)

II.                essay questions

In advance of your exam, select one print advertisement (i.e. a single picture), either from a magazine, a billboard, or a website. Bring a copy of your chosen ad to the exam with you. Analyze the details that together constitute the symbols in the ad. Explain the meanings attached to these details. Write about all the details in the ad. Then show how the ad tries to attach these symbols and their meanings to the product. Throughout, make your analysis as detailed as possible. At the end of your essay, explain briefly (no more than one handwritten page) whether you think advertising like this is ethical or unethical, and why.

Business ethics

In advance of your exam, select two examples of American companies that employ overseas labor under bad or difficult conditions. (Remember that a company may either employ this overseas labor directly, or through its contractors in other countries.) For each example, present the factual background in no more than two paragraphs (approximately one handwritten page). Then explain which of the four possible rules for overseas labor that we have discussed in class is in your judgment the ethically justified rule for the two cases you have presented, and why. (HINT: don’t forget the definition of social justice, and the various philosophies of social justice that we have studied!)

Based on your own ideas, experience, or research, describe two cases in the world of business in which you think it is very difficult to decide what the right thing to do is. Describe each case in no more than two paragraphs. For each case, itemize the ethical pro’s and con’s, and explain each one. Then explain which of these ethical considerations should take priority, and why. All things considered, would you choose to do the ethical thing, as you have defined it in this case? Why or why not?
