It means to be less concerned with ethics and what is truly right, and be more focused on what is palatable and agreeable to popular opinion. Politicians, for example, want as many votes as possible in the next election, so they typically do what is popular with, and desired by, the voting public. So, if you are “politic”, “political”, or have a “political sensibility”, then you are more interested in winning people over, being seen in a positive light by people, than in anything else — ethics, being your own person, etc.
