The novel

Fight Club

, by Chuck Palahniuk, is a cult classic that delves into themes of madness, masculinity, violence, and consumption (among many others!). In 1999, the novel was adapted into a feature film that some would argue is increasingly relevant today. In this unit, we are developing our skills by selecting a key concept or theme, interpreting what the novel and/or film has to say about that theme, and situating our analyses in the larger academic conversation about the film and the key concept.

Select 1 theme or key concept from

Fight Club

(the book or film), and in a fully developed argument, interpret what the text’s point is about that theme. Your argument and analysis should be developed within the academic conversation about Fight Club and the larger social or political debate about your key concept.

Guidelines

●Begin your essay with an introduction to the text and/or your theme.

●Incorporate a thesis that offers an original interpretation of what the text’s point or message is about the theme or key concept you selected.

● Develop your argument across body paragraphs that offer subclaims, introduce and

incorporate evidence, and include close analysis in support of those claims.

●Draw evidence from the following primary and secondary texts:

○Fight Club

(book, film or both)

○At least ONE academic article about

Fight Club

○At least TWO additional reputable texts (open option; can be about film,

book, and/or key concept generally)

●Throughout the essay, and in the conclusion, discuss the relevance of the fictional

text with regard to real world ideologies, debates or manifestations of your theme.

●Include a Works Cited page in the most recent MLA format. The Works Cited page

does not count toward the page and/or word count length requirements.

Times New Roman 12 or Arial 11, 1-inch margins. Final drafts should

demonstrate correct grammar and usage appropriate to a transfer-level college

assignment.

Essays that do not meet the page length and/or formatting requirements will

receive grade deductions.

Please refer to the semester schedule for all relevant due dates, including drafts and

peer review workshop dates (which require printed copies of the drafts).

Violations of academic integrity, including (but not limited to) plagiarism, use of

unauthorized sources or assistance, or submission of others’ work as your own, will

result in a failing grade for the assignment and/or the course.
