Biopsychosocial assessments
Describe how Biopsychosocial assessments support the overall process of counseling.
Biopsychosocial assessments play a vital role in the counseling process by providing a comprehensive understanding of a client’s functioning across three interconnected domains, biological, psychological, and social. (Black et al. 2015) This approach allows counselors to gather in-depth information that goes beyond just symptoms, helping to uncover root causes, contextual factors, and individual strengths. The biopsychosocial assessment supports accurate diagnosis, goal setting, and personalized treatment planning. (Black et al. 2015)
Identify two counseling skills from the Counseling Skills Rubric that you believe were your strengths in this week’s sessions.
I believe one of my strengths as a developing counselor is the ability to effectively use the skill of immediacy. Immediacy involves addressing what is happening in the moment within the counseling relationship, and it can be a powerful tool for deepening the therapeutic connection and fostering client insight. I exhibit this through the use of flowing, open-ended questions, such as who, what, where, when, and why. Which encourage clients to explore their thoughts and feelings in real time. (Therapy Trainings. October 2024) Additionally, I support this skill with nonverbal communication, such as mirroring the client’s body language in a respectful and empathetic way. This helps create a sense of safety, attunement, and presence in the session, allowing the client to feel seen and understood. (Therapy Trainings. October 2024) I find that using immediacy in this way helps build trust and opens the door to more meaningful, honest dialogue.
Identify two counseling skills from the Counseling Skills Rubric that are still challenging to you.
In the moment, I sometimes struggle with distinguishing between paraphrasing and summarizing. While I have a clear conceptual understanding of both skills and can recognize when each is appropriate, applying them accurately in real-time can still be challenging. During Residency I, I made meaningful progress in both understanding and implementing these core counseling techniques. That experience helped increase my confidence in utilizing paraphrasing and summarizing effectively during sessions. However, I still experience some anxiety around executing them correctly, especially when trying to ensure I’m truly capturing the client\\\’s message without altering the meaning. I recognize that continued practice, supervision, and self-reflection will help me become more fluent and comfortable using these skills with consistency and accuracy. (Aipc. 2019)
