Does Race Discrimination Exist in the work place?

Racial discrimination has continued to be a pervasive issue in the culture all around the world and in the work place. Despite the negative effect of racial discrimination in the work place, many people have failed to address racism issue in the work place as it brings about different emotions. Prevalent racial discrimination in work place have followed pattern where African American, Latinos, Asians Americans, American Indians among different other forms of racism have been evident in different countries. It is an issue that affects the outlook and the output of workers (Quadagno, 2014).Racial discrimination will affect a person psychologically and will impact him/her as an employee, as well as reduce production and job satisfaction. Also, it will make a worker feel depressed. Some of racial discrimination is about stereotypes and judging people about where are they from.

“ The term “racism” is often used in a loose and unreflective way to describe the hostile or negative feelings of one ethnic group or “people” toward another and the actions resulting from such attitudes”(Fredrickson2002). Racism is a group of ideologies and practices(Healey, 2008). that an individual or a group of people have so that they can justify unequal or unfair treatment of other individuals. This justification is based on the conditions of that are perceived as racial or have ethnical difference between the individuals. Racism can take many forms but the most popular is that of social actions, beliefs or political systems. These are the most popular areas that people differ on and that causes a rift or tension between them. It is an avenue that brings forth racial discrimination.

There are many disadvantages that are associated with racial discrimination. That is why it is imperative that the management of any organization does their best to see that racism does not exist. It is an issue that should be addressed immediately it has been detected at any workplace. The main effect of racial discrimination in work place is that it could reduce production and job satisfaction (Young, 2006). As the employees now have factions within the organization, they will no longer be working as a team but will be segregated from each other. This will impact their productivity as they will not have a relationship with each other and definitely not work as a team but be competing against each other.

Another issue that will notably affect their productivity is that the different races will be happy with the failure of another race instead of working in synergy to help advance the objectives and goals of the company (Quadagno, 2014).The team should be shown the importance of working together as a team and look beyond each other’s racial and ethnical background. They should be encouraged to concentrate on the growth of the company that will only be achieved by them working as a team to improve productivity.

Racism should disappear, because we can’t judge people about where are they from. Instead people should look at the gains that they stand to achieve if they work together with each other as a team. It is vital to look at the bigger picture and not where a person has come from. The insight that a person stands to gain is more from working together and looking past their background is greater than concentrating on racism and segregating each other. Another impact of racial discrimination is that it affects the person psychologically (Quadagno,2014). A person that has undergone racism tends to be emotionally affected as their confidence has been shattered completely based on what they have gone through. The individual tends to lack self-assurance and will doubt their actions. There will be lack of decisiveness due to what the person has gone through.

Racial discrimination can also be looked at as a stereotype that individuals come up with. For instance, there are stereotypes that are associated with the type of job a person from a particular race is given(Young, 2006). More often than not most blue color jobs are given to Latinos or Black Americans. A Latino is looked at as uneducated and immigrants that only came into America to work for the white Americans (Young, 2006).On the other hand Black Americans are looked to us as drivers, janitors and house keepers. The notation is that they cannot be anything more than where they have been boxed. While in reality there are very many Black American and Latino people that are educated and have a lot to bring to the table (Young, 2006). Regardless of the job title that a person holds they are still human beings that deserve the respect that is given to any other person.

Due to the disadvantages that have been seen it is vital that race discrimination be banned in the work place because it impacts the employee negatively. It is an issue that should be taken with the utmost seriousness and all parties involved work towards ensuring it is a practice that is completely eliminated. It is the duty of the leadership team to ensure that they fully educate their teams the importance of working as a team and that this cannot be achieved if racism is prevalent in the work place(Quadagno, 2014).A good way of educating employees is having courses or sessions where they are shown how racial discrimination negatively impacts them. The most important department that needs to champion this and fully understand this vice is the human resource department(Quadagno, 2014).This is the department that can single-handedly ensure that it becomes a thing of the past in the world. The government also has a role to play in that they can come up with federal laws on racial discrimination. These laws can be stringent that would help deter any person from carrying out these uncouth practices.

Another area that the government and leaders can help in eradicating this issue is in the society. Racial discrimination, even though it fought against in work place still happens in the modern society in several ways. One area is in the selection andlack of recruitment. They way recruitment agencies look at a person is a clear indication of how they view them in real life. As mentioned before as well job classification also plays a big role in enhancing racial discrimination. People should stop looking at blue collar jobs as being done by only a specific races and white collar jobs for a completely different race. All jobs can be done by any person or any race as long as the individual has the technical skills and knowledge that are required for the job. There is another avenue in the work place that enhances racial discrimination that should be thwarted which is mistreatment.

Racial discrimination is no longer present in the society as employers are working hard to eliminate this issue. One can thus say that there is no racial discrimination in the world place, because there are strict policies against it. Because, in the current generation eradication of racial discrimination at workplace has become a priority for many organizations. Because of the globalization nature of majority of the businesses, people are relocating to different places in the world in search of good career life and better paying jobs (MacDonald, 2004).

Racial discrimination will affect a person psychologically and will impact him/her as an employee, as well as reduce production and job satisfaction; some of racial discrimination is about stereotypes and judging people about where are they from. Racial discrimination is a vice that needs to be addressed due to the ills that are associated with it (Healey, 2008). To solve the issue, organizations should not employ people based on their race, but should instead look at their, skills, abilities and education requirements.Racial discrimination should be seen as a vice, and immediate efforts to eliminate it should be devised. For a society to grow it needs to put aside issues that drag it back and look at issues that build them as a whole.
