The theory of media technology consists of two schools of thought, or, two approaches to the study of media technologies and their effects. The outline of these polarized approaches is informed by two key terms. The Utopian approach is generally conceptualized as forward looking, liberal and trusting in the positive outlook promised by technological progress, while the Dystopian approach is associated with a conservative, deterministic and suspicious attitude toward media technology. While McLuhan’s ideas are abstract and difficult to grasp, we may find them worth grappling with since his aim was to understand the laws governing the media. McLuhan made the observation that we always start out as consumers of new media, and then, inadvertently, we become consumed by it. He saw this process as a self-perpetuating loop that may pose a danger to the future of humanity. However, Mcluhan believed that if we engage in a study of the laws governing the media we can hope to reduce some of the confusion created by it. Understanding will provide us with means of control. Whether we support this approach or whether we lean toward the optimism of AI/Big Data/ Transhuman evangelists, this week we seek to delve into these questions as develop greater understanding of the theory that informs the scholarly study of media technology.
