Analysis Essay
Rough Draft of First Analysis Essay
Analyze the argument of your first scholarly (peer-reviewed) article
Your own thesis should state whether you believe the article is or is
not successful—or perhaps only moderately successful (i.e. somewhere in between)—in
supporting its argument. Your essay must include the following:
• Introduction paragraph: Full name of the article in quotation marks; full name of the author;
summary of the article’s thesis; your own thesis statement about the article
• Body Paragraphs: At least three body paragraphs which analyze key evidence from the
article in order to support your thesis; paraphrase and summarize the article’s information
as much as possible and only directly quote small amounts of words and phrasing (no
giant block quotes!)
• Conclusion Paragraph: A brief concluding summary of your analysis to leave your
readers with strong sense of your analysis claims
• Works Cited Page: MLA citation of your article
This essay should be two pages (around 500 words, give or take) with an additional works
cited page. It should be formatted in MLA style (like the sample essay in the book) with page
numbers and heading; however, a title for the essay is not necessary. In presenting the article’s
ideas, use only the third-person point of view (no first or second-persons, I/we or you) and
remain in the present tense. The entire essay should be double-spaced in Times New Roman, 12-
point font.
