Directions: How to Write the Analysis Essay on the American Dream
Write a four-paragraph analysis essay. Topic: What is your American Dream, and how will you achieve it?
REQUIREMENTS
An Introduction
A thesis statement at the end of the introduction
Two body paragraphs–each paragraph to begin with a topic sentence and includes analysis of the main point
A Conclusion
TWO pieces of evidence: one from the American Dream article by Abrams, and one from Mangu-Ward.
This evidence can support any element of the essay–introduction, analyses, conclusion.
The evidence must have in-text citations. You must also have a Works Cited page at the end that cites the articles
NOTE: You can use other sources, as well. Makes sure your cite ALL your sources, accurately
THE PROCESS
Paragraph 1: Introduction
Develop a good introduction to your essay. (at least four or five sentences)
Make sure it has a relevant hook and background about the central argument.
End the introduction with your thesis statement, which will include the key argument/claim (your American Dream) and two main points (ways in which you will achieve the Dream)
(TIP: You can add an idea from Abrams’s article in the introduction. Do not forget to add an in-text citation)
Paragraph 2: Body paragraph 1
Start with a topic sentence that includes the key claim/argument and the first main point (from the thesis). (S)
Provide evidence (this can be from a source or your own understanding/reasoning (logos) of the main point. (E)
Then analyze/explain the main point with organized ideas (idea 1, idea 2, idea 3). (X)
TIP 1: Make sure you use good transitions to move from one idea to the next.
(TIP 2: You can add a quotation/paraphrase/summary from the articles in the analysis.
Do not forget to add an explanation
Do not forget to add an in-text citations
Conclude the paragraph to show how the main point proves the key claim. (C)
