John archer: life history
John archer was a British politician, and the first African to be elected a mayor in the history of England. He was commonly referred to as ‘the colored mayor’. He was born on 8th June, 1863. He was the child of Richard archer and Mary Theresa Burns. Richard hailed from Barbados while Mary from Ireland. The two parents belonged to the shipping and sailing community. His father was actually a sailor. John and his family lived in black street, Liverpool. This street has since been demolished and never exists. John’s mother was very illiterate.
