As an individual health promotion activities are aimed at helping you achieve your fullest potential through change (Pender, Murdaugh, & Pason’s, 2014). Health promotion activities help achieve self-actualize and remaining in the “positive state” of well-being, as well as gaining control of your own. Health promotion leads to disease prevention. Physical activity has multiple effects on one’s health. Not only does physical activity decrease a number of health concerns but it can also reduce symptoms of depression, improve cognitive skills and improves the ability to concentrate and pay attention. In individuals who are not very active even by increasing activity level slightly, such as including a daily walk, can have health benefits (Healthy People 2020).
One health promotion activity that I have tried to practice more into my personal life is physical activity. I live a very busy life and it can be stressful at times. I have tried to make a point in my life to include physical activity because it mentally makes me feel better and that is a change I notice immediately. When I take the time to go for a run it helps clear my mind and gives me time for me, which I think some do not do enough of. While I do physical activity for my sense of feeling good, at the same time I know that I am helping my body as well, so a win-win for me. I have found myself encouraging my patients to include physical activity into their daily life, but I also make sure to tell them that it doesn’t mean they have to go run a marathon.

According to the CDC’s website, heart disease and stroke are two of the leading causes of death in the U.S. (2015). Current guidelines suggest brisk aerobic activity, which includes walking, at least 150 minutes a week. Broken down, that’s 30 minutes for 5 days. Not only does walking puts you at lower risk for the disease, it can be mentally refreshing too, decreasing the risk of developing depression. Watching your diet and limiting sodium also reduces the risk of heart disease. While working case management in heart failure with an insurance company, I stressed the importance of walking daily and watching sodium intake to prevent excess fluid from developing. The patient’s were very receptive of these activities and maintained their weight and prevented fluid overload.
Diabetes mellitus is a disease which has led to high rates of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Health promotion is being increasingly recognized as a viable, cost-effective strategy to prevent diabetes (Kumar & Preetha, 2012). The interventions at the individual and community level includes lifestyle modification programs for weight control and increasing physical activity with community participation using culturally appropriate strategies (Kumar et al., 2012).
