Jill, yes, external validity is something that needs to be considered in the development of every research study. For example, a threat to external validity could occur when a study is conducted with participants from one setting and results may not generalize to other participants or settings.
For example, interventions that may work among men may not work among women, changes in clinical practice may work in private doctors’ offices but not in clinics, and smoking cessation practices may work in smokers who are ready to quit smoking but not in smokers who are not ready. Interventions to increase healthy eating may use strategies such as “apps” or emailing healthy recipes; this strategy is unlikely to work for people who live in neighborhoods without access to healthy foods in grocery stores (food desert) These examples could all pose a threat to external validity if it is not clearly understood which population (sample) is being studied. The solution would be to clearly identify the population (and sample) studied and restrict conclusions based on results to that specific population.
