Assignment Objectives
The specific objectives for the assignment are that you be able to:
explain the historical genesis and impact of intensified political conflict and warfare in the first half of the twentieth century
integrate analysis of multiple forms of evidence into the making of an historical argument
consider the personal, moral and psychological dimensions of issues of violence and violent change in modern history
Requirements
The final product of the assignment will be an essay of five pages for answering four questions by using four resources, I’ll provide them later.
Here are some suggestions and questions to stir your thinking about how you will approach the essay:
1. Be sure to answer the question directly, as opposed to speaking generally about the war. Try also to use as full a range of sources as you can.
2. The “Women at War” packet is a useful collection of first and second hand accounts of women’s participation in WWI. You might consider how women like Naomi Loughnan and Magda Tott talk in the documents about their experiences of participation in the war effort. Do they qualify or downplay their roles, or do they see their work, and themselves as important? Do you have the sense of their experiencing new kinds of opportunity and even power, or is their experience more mixed and conflicted? Is their identity or sense of themselves at all changed by the experience? What is the proof of that in the sources?
3. With respect to the propaganda posters, the images in the third section of the PowerPoint were ones directed specifically at women. How did these images shape and portray women’s participation in the war effort? How do they address women, what do they ask of them, and how do they invite them to see themselves and their role in the war? What specific posters, or aspects of the depiction, support your interpretation?
4. The Mary Borden document provides a nurse’s account of serving on the front lines of World War I. Given the scale of the conflict, and the intensity of its violence, nurses played a vital role in the war efforts of their respective countries. How does Borden view the conflict itself, and her work within it? Does she strike you as dutiful, or conflicted, ambivalent or even critical in her depiction of her role?
5. You might also consider incorporating the Kollwitz etchings for insight into how women might have experienced the costs of war in new ways in World War I. How do they portray wartime women and family, and the impact of the war upon them? How would you characterize their artistic style, and why might the artist have adopted that style for the subject matter? What do you find most striking in her images, and does she offer any clues about how women coped (and continue to cope) with the costs of modern war? How do these images relate to the propaganda images in the posters?
