General guidelines:

First, you should read, research and analyze the historical context of the play. What are the themes, what is it about, when was it first staged, why was it written. Try to uncover aspects of the original production of the play such as where it might have been staged, the common style of acting, who played the principle roles, was Shakespeare in the production, the typical costumes, and the standard staging practices of the time. Look for anything else interesting about the play specifically and the English Renaissance Theatre genrally.

Your Research (MLA citation of sources – no Wikipedia) must include 4-5 sources beyond your textbook. 2 of which should be print sources. Harold Bloom is a preeminent Shakespearian scholar whose work will be of value to you.

Once you have a good understanding of the play’s historical context, you should watch the modern adaptation. Take notes on how the live production attempts to maintain historical accuracy or its purposeful inattention to historical accuracy. Analyze the effectiveness of the modern production – does it do what it set out to do? What are the themes the production explores and how does the modern production concept differ from the concept of original production. Consider aspects of the modern production. Think about how it is staged, the style of acting, the costumes, and the staging practices. How are these different of similar to the practices of the English Renaissance? Also, think about the overall affect the play had on you, the audience member? Was the production relevant/effective and why or why not? Please understand that you are not seeing a live production so your experience with either of the plays will be more passive and the impact less powerful.

After you have researched the play and analyzed the modern adaptation, you will be ready to write your paper. The structure of the paper should follow the typical structure for a compare/contrast essay.
