Health benefits of fiber
Fiber has many health benefits, and yet Americans, on average, don’t consume the recommended daily allowance. What are some of the health benefits of fiber? Why do you think Americans don’t consume enough fiber? What strategies can we employ to increase fiber consumption?

Adequate amounts of fiber help to lower bad cholesterol in our bodies. It also plays a big part in reducing the risk of heart diseases, diabetes, colon cancer, diverticular disease and constipation. The recommended fiber intake per person per day is 25 to 30 grams a day. This should be from food and not supplements. However on average, an American intakes about 15 grams a day which is about half of the recommended amount (Clemens et al., 2012).
