SY233: Observation of a Toddler (1 – 3 year olds)
HW 1: 100 points
Submit a 3-4 page paper (not including cover page, abstract, or reference page) that addresses
the following points. Your paper should be numbered in the format below for ease of grading
1. A brief physical description of the child. Use approximations of quantitative terms (age,
height, weight). (10 pts)
2. Assess the child’s ability with age-appropriate milestones of gross motor and fine
motor development. Refer to the book to tell me, based on your approximation of age if
development of each milestone is normative or non-normative. Give specific
examples of why. (5 pts)
a. What is the child’s zone of proximal motor development? How could the
parent best scaffold the behavior? Did the parent scaffold? (5 pts)
3. Where is the child in Piaget’s six substages of sensorimotor development? Primary,
secondary, tertiary circular? Representational thinking? Or is you child in concrete
operations? If so give examples of egocentrism, animism, and centration. Identify the
stage and give examples of how the child has or hasn’t mastered specific sub-stages.
(10 pts)
4. Categorize the vocalizations of the child. Did the child rely on gestures? Use
phenomes, over-extension, under-extension, over-regulation? What was predominant
mode of speech (holophrase, telegraphic, syntax)? Give examples. (10 pts)
5. A brief qualitative description (temperament, emotions, shyness) of the child. Assess
the temperament: easy, difficult or slow to warm up. Give examples to support your
conclusion. (10 pts)
6. Examples of gender influences. Comment on if your example supports or dispels
gendertyping. An example of an activity that dispels gender-typing would be a boy in a
pink shirt. List at least 5 examples that support gender typing and 1 that dispels
gender typing. (10 pts)
Hint: focus on: style of dress, toy preference, peer preference, and types of
activity each child is engaged in, child activity level.
7. The child’s reaction to unfamiliar children and adults. Your assessment of the child’s
attachment style according to Ainsworth: Secure, Avoidant, Resistant, Disorganized.
Give examples to support your assessment. (10 pts.)
8. An example of how the parents tried to teach the child about behavioral standards and
expectations
a. How did the parent try to correct the child? Was the focus on what NOT to do or
what TO DO? Which Operant Conditioning techniques were observed? Give an
example of at least two: Positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement,
positive punishment, negative punishment. Give examples.
b. How did the child respond? Did the child show signs of self-regulation?

9. Identify the child’s stage of psychosocial development according to Erikson. Did they
show signs of achieving the virtue of the previous stage? Do they appear to be on
track for achieving the virtue of this stage? Give examples of why or why not. (10 pts)
