Successful advocacy starts with successful communication. It is important to explain to people why something is important, what the problems are, and how to work with the issues. It is important to do this succinctly – many people have a short attention span.

In this homework, you are working with this scenario:

Imagine that you are communicating with a group of deaf/hard of hearing people who do not know anything about text-to-9-1-1. They may never have made an emergency call in their lives. Imagine that you are explaining to them the concept of text-to-9-1-1, its key features, how it is different from the current 9-1-1 system, and what they need to know about text-to-9-1-1.

In this scenario, you should touch on the education questions that are covered in the class Powerpoint on text-to-9-1-1. Imagine yourself in the position of the deaf/hard of hearing people, and figure out what they absolutely need to know.

(In my opinion, it’s useless to text indeed of calling via video reply service because it may save your time. VRS may tell you that please wait until they are searching for an American sign language.)

Explaining text-to-911 to a person who is deaf or has difficulty in hearing would be very difficult, because this is a person who may not have used a phone in their life. This makes it so hard for them to understand the entire concept. Therefore, as I explain while talking, I will also use symbols that they understand clearly. This is what I will explain to them to enable them to easily understand what to do when they face danger or they think that they are in serious danger and require someone to come to their aid:

Text-to-911 is a call number that the security agency especially the police, have provided for one to reach them when they are in danger. Making a call is taking a communicating gadget, a phone and pressing number 9 then 1 then 1….
