specific example about socializing someone into less-familiar discourse patterns
I am a student in education department. We need to read the chapter 3 of the book(Building Academic Language ) I shared and then prepare a written response (2-3 pages) that explains the nature of the situation and provides specific examples of the strategies that were used to socialize someone into the less-familiar discourse patterns.
The explanation of the professor:
During this coming week (or from your recent past), pay attention to a conversation that you are part of or able to listen to closely. It should be an example of someone “apprenticing” or “scaffolding” someone else into a conversation whereby one or more persons are supporting another in a more complex or unfamiliar language “register” by using the “co-shaping” methods presented throughout Building Academic Language, Ch. 3.
Examples could include:
- A work setting where a supervisor or more experienced employee is coaching another on the job, and language skills are involved (e.g., training a new waiter);
- A parent or older person talking with a small child and teaching “something;”
- An instructor in a class or a coach teaching content and skills to students or players;
- A person trying to explain or teach a skill or topic to someone who is unfamiliar with it, and language skills are involved (e.g., teaching your grandmother how to use her new iPad, watching an athletic event with someone unfamiliar with the sport)
Prepare a written response (2-3 pages) that explains the nature of the situation and provides specific examples of the strategies that were used to socialize someone into the less-familiar discourse patterns. Specifically name the strategies that corresponded with those in Ch. 3 (see helpful list on p. 65)
