Religion
- The anthropology of religion, which is—as explained at the beginning of the term—the anthropological subfield that this course introduces, recognizes that there are a great many and quite different myths of creation of the world out there that involve a diversity of gods’ and mythical beings’ actions that led to the creation of the world. Opposite to this mythical plurality can be found the scientific discipline of physics, for which the idea of God or Gods is not necessary to imagine the beginning of the universe(s) (see the link “Recent Press Articles of Interest” on the Course Contents page and read the article “Books of The Times – Many Universes in Stephen Hawking’s Grand Design”).
Considering this conceptual opposition, adopt the perspective of an anthropologist (who would be using any of the theoretical frameworks we have briefly discussed so far) to attempt to explain the need of human beings around the world to use religions to explain how the world became what it is, and where it comes from. Your answer/essay should accurately use as many concepts covered so far in the course as you see fit.
The grading of the essay will be done applying the attached rubric.
Your essay should fill at least 3-5 double-spaced pages (not including any eventual title page and list of cited references). You do not need to conduct any research to answer the question asked, but you will not be penalized if you refer to other relevant texts than the course’s materials. You must apply the Chicago Manual of Style for citations and list of cited references (see the Course Contents page on this site, and particularly the Chicago-Style Citation Quick Guide once you click on the Chicago Manual of Style link).
