For the response, you can take many approaches; here are some ways to respond to readings:

What you notice: note features or pieces of information that stood out—that were especially engaging, interesting, surprising, infuriating, etc.

Why this? Speculate about why the author included certain pieces of information or took a certain approach to presenting the information.  What facts are presented?  To what extent does the author play on the readers emotions?

Go one step further; based on this information, what should the readers do? What would be the outcome if a person followed up on the information in the reading?

Examine the context: what is the writer’s background? What situation is the writer addressing?  Is the writer mainly addressing people who share a certain experience?  If so, what is it?  From what point of view is the author writing?  What values are behind this information?  Does he or she seem to have any biases or hidden assumptions?

What’s missing? Is there anything the writer is forgetting to include?

Make associations. How does this information connect to your own experiences or what you have personally observed?  How does this information connect to other things you have read about?  How does it connect to concepts you have been learning about in other classes?

Does anyone disagree? Is there an opposing point of view?  What is it?  Who might disagree with what this author is saying?
