The key element in this conflict was a simple, yet negative response by local landholders to any and all federal government control of land in their area.
It is essentially a stakeholder conflict based upon too much recurrent history of the U.S. government reclaiming land from ranchers in this area.
Increased government presence of any kind was viewed as a possible erosion of their freedoms. The resources that were in question were lands that were used for grazing for ranchers, and the rights to maintain and decide how their roads through these areas were maintained. It was a knee-jerk reaction to what they perceived as “rampant environmentalism” which would result in the limits to their personal freedoms within their own state.

The problem arose when the president decided to create a national monument with land in Utah. This was announced without notifying the people in the area. This caused a major power struggle, who is going to manage the land, who will control access, how will the land be use, and “Who Dare” do this to land in our area. This cause two groups to be activated; those in local government over control of the land and possible tourist access, and locals that were currently using the land. These two groups banded together to and took control from the federal government. Planning moved forward and the locals not yet apart of the process begin again to struggle for control. Those most active got the most control, those that chose not to be a part of the process the first time found themselves on the outside yet again.

From the movie Hoosiers, as you consider Coach Dale and his integration into the community, do you think he may have used more politically correct behaviors to garner power? Identify two examples of his power being challenged and how he responded. Was it effective? Respond to two of your fellow learners with a positive yet critical analysis of their discussion.

As Coach Dale began to coach a basketball team in a new city, he didn’t care whether or not he fit in or not, he let everybody know that he was there to coach the basketball team to the best of his ability regardless of whether the towns people or the players liked him. When the town and the principal of the school only want to focus on winning the game, Coach Dale focused more on developing the players with the fundamentals of the game especially as he is quoted as saying “Five players on the floor functioning as one single unit: team, team, team – no one person is more important than the others.” as Coach Dale didn’t have to behave like how everybody wanted him to behave, he just had to make it known that only those that worked hard would make it on the team even though everybody wanted Jimmy Chitwood on the team as he was the best player in town.
Another example of Coach Dale’s power being challenged and gets him removed as the coach is his decision to make Shooter the assistant coach which sends the message that he was going to do things his way. However, in the end, with the backing of the best player Jimmy who will only
play for Coach Dale, he is able to coach his way. Though everything that Coach Dale did caused an uproar, he still stuck to his method and in the end everything worked out.

As of matter of fact, I do. The first one that comes to mind is this scene where a bunch of locals and Coach Dale were at a diner and he was being bombarded with several questions and comments about the team that it seemed to be more gossiping than anything. To all this, Coach Dale just said he needed to leave. To me this was a great move. You do not need to say anything else and this will keep you from saying the wrong statement. This also, in my opinion, showed them that he was all about the team and nothing else.
Another really powerful moment was when he stood up by Shooter’s side when he became part of the team–assisting coach. This created so much commotion in the town, but the coach reaffirmed Shooter regardless of comments and agendas. Instead of listening to those comments, he supported him even more. This is what a manager/leader should do whenever there is someone with skills and knowledge that can bring some news ideas to improve a project.
