Against Environmentalism
Below are directions and attachments
Read “Alchemy Should Not be Taught, Neither Should Creationism & rdquo; and & ldquo;Against ‘Environmentalism ’” (both are attached) and write an analysis/response.
Before reading the pieces, read through the following questions to consider while writing your response. Once you know your purpose for reading the pieces, print out the pieces and apply the steps for critical reading (mark up the text with your purpose for reading in mind).
Write a response to the pieces where you analyze the following: What is the problem or issue that the author identifies? What is the solution or request the author proposes? What is the author ’s purpose (what does he hope to achieve – it is an argument, so in general the purpose is to persuade; but what is he trying to persuade his audience to DO)? Who is the author? What credentials does he have? How does he establish his ethos (make himself seem credible)? Does he “borrow ” credibility by quoting experts? Are the experts credible? Why or why not? What was the method of delivery for each piece? Based on the method of delivery, who would you say is the intended audience? What type of evidence does the author use to support his argument? Does the argument seem reasonable/logical? Why or why not?
While you should consider these questions and address them in your response, you should not simply list your answers to the questions. Write your response using complete sentences and paragraphs to organize your ideas. You may want to organize your response by analyzing each piece separately (one paragraph that analyzes the first piece, then a paragraph that analyzes the other).
Your response should be approximately 350-400 words (or roughly one-and-a-half pages using standard MLA document format – one-inch margins, 11 pt. type, double spaced, etc.). No in-text citation or works cited page is needed. Be sure to carefully proofread your response before printing it.
Type/Print your response and bring it to class on Friday, March 10. We will be sharing these in class and use them to guide our class discussion about argumentation (specifically for a non-academic audience). This will count as an Informal Writing assignment and be worth up to 10 points. Responses will be graded based on whether they effectively address the questions and whether they follow the instructions above.
