Questions from the class:
This week we have discussed the role of the President, the Congress , and state government in the implementation of healthcare policy. What is the role of local governments? How do local government’s impact health policy and do they have a role in the implementation of health policy?
Unfortunately many times bias plays a role in decisions. In Chapter 4 of Health Politics and Policy/4E, Brodie and Blendon introduce the idea of public opinion and how public opinion impacts health policy–which can lead to this kind of bias. They further define who the “public” actually consists of, in the eyes of politicians.
What are the key principles noted by Brodie and Blendon about public opinion? From your perspective, which of these influences has the most influence specifically on health policy?
Generally, the President offers ideas that are specifically targeted and meant to address the angst of the American public. In Chapter 4, Congress, in the Health Politics and Policy/4E, Mark Peterson proposes that there are three strategies that a President can use regarding healthcare reform. These strategies are combat, collaboration, and co-optation. Which of these strategies was most used by the President during the formulation and legislation of the ACA?
During the formulation of the Affordable Care Act, the President wanted to implement a “public option” that would be available to all Americans who did not have access to health insurance through other means. The Republicans vehemently fought the public option and it ultimately was dropped from the final version of the APA.
Why did the Republicans oppose the implementation of a public option?
