Explain your organization’s products and/services.
This is a paper that aims to bring together work you have done on the company, PSS World Medical, Jacksonville, FL and show that you can apply the ideas and tools we’ve been reading and discussing this semester. This assignment also will fulfill the Community Based Transformational Learning Objectives noted above.
Unlike some of your periodic assignments, your final paper is a formal, expository paper. This means that this work should show proper structure, editing and citation. (A note on citation: I do not care how you cite references as long as you are consistent and it is a recognized style of citation.)
The paper will have the following sections in its body.
Part I: Background
Explain your organization’s products and/services. (If it’s many, try to give a decent reflection of the types of products and services.)
Explain your organization’s size, structure of ownership, and its service scope (e.g. local, regional, national, or multinational.)
Give a brief account of your organization’s history.
Part II: Descriptive Analysis
Using the materials you have gathered (as well as tools from class) explain your organization’s stated goals, values, and code of ethics (or those of your analog organization). This is to describe the goals, values, and code of ethics using your understanding of the general ethical values (e.g. greater good, rights, respect for persons, virtue, or duties). Explain their values, do not simply repeat them.
Using your materials (as well as a reasonable use of your imagination based on what you’ve learned about your organization), explain your organization’s formal mechanisms, tools, and/or culture and how they are utilized to achieve its stated goals, as well as meets it values and code of conduct. This is to describe the various formal mechanisms employed by your organization and not to evaluate them.
Part III: Prescriptive Analysis
Using what we’ve learned and discussed about organizational ethics, evaluate the following:
Evaluate your organization’s stated goals, values and code of ethics.
Evaluate the organizational mechanisms employed to give ethics authority, how they disseminate knowledge of their ethical views, and how they maintain them.
This is the place where you use your understanding of the ethical values we have studied in class (greater good, duties, or virtues) to critique your organization’s ethical values. In addition, this is where you critique their mechanisms for meeting these values. Based on your evaluation, explain your opinion about what parts of your organization’s ethical vision and practices are well-designed and what could be improved upon. Explain your reasons for your opinions, and make some positive proposals for improvement.
Your essay will be graded on completeness, proper and copious use of the tools and ideas we’ve read and discussed this semester, as well as the clarity and grammatical quality of your written work.
Note: This assignment will likely require that you interview or meet with members of the organization you have chosen in order to obtain the information which you will need to complete the assignment. If you do opt not to meet with an employee, you may just look up the information from the company’s website or other sources.
Further Guidelines:
Choice of Organization (PSS World Medical), medical supplier company. Make sure that your organization has materials you need to complete your project (e.g. an available code of ethics as well as receptivity to share with you what they do in their ethics programs.) I am willing to make suggestions, if you don’t have an idea.
