This week, we began with an overview of the philosophical area of study called metaphysics and investigated the nature of reality from both Greek and modern perspectives. We looked at the foundations of rationalism in Platonic philosophy and examined Aristotle’s idea that reality is the natural world. We also traced the shift from the Greek belief in the limits of human knowledge to the modern idea that human beings can know the true nature of reality with utter certainty before returning to the question of how (and what) human beings know. Finally, we briefly discussed how philosophy can help us to reflect upon our religious beliefs and explored the idea of religious plurality.
