Assignment Instructions: If you would like to earn up to 10 extra credit points you may complete the following assignment.
During the 2024 election cycle, Governor Newsom advocated for a State bond, Proposition 1, and it was placed on the ballot. It eventually passed and is now part of California policy. Please respond to the following questions about Proposition 1. You may use sources such as news stories, Wikipedia, simple google searches etc. to respond to the questions. Be sure that you cite properly throughout and that you use your own words. Any use of AI is an automatic 0 and be careful not to lift directly from the sources that you find. A few quotes are fine, but I am looking for your words, and your interpretations of the policy.
1. Do some research to explain the details of the policy. How did it come to be on the ballot and what is it about? How is it meant to solve problems? In other words, what are the goals and strategies of the policy?
2. What are the opposing viewpoints, or non-supporters of the bond? Who spoke out against the proposition and why? Your response to this question should include at least three different sources.
3. What are the positions of the advocates for the policy? Who is in support of it and why? Your response to this question should include at least three sources (it’s okay if they are the same sources for question 2, just be sure that you are gathering accurate information about who is in support and why).
4. Describe where things stand with the policy today. Is there money spent yet? If so, on what? If no money has been spent, try to determine why.
5. Finally, using class discussions, material, and lectures, discuss the policy and how it might help and/or hurt people who are struggling mentally. Be sure that your response uses sociological thinking about mental health and illness AND substance abuse. Most importantly, this aspect of the assignment should reflect overarching themes of the course.
Your grade will be largely based on your response to question 5.
