How do counselors assess and evaluate client’s Readiness for termination?
I feel that a counselor recognizes when a client has met their therapeutic goals and there is independent growth. The counselor recognizes the client has achieved their goals, there is a reduction in the maladaptive thought and behavioral patterns that were presented before, and the client has developed positive coping skills. In addition, the counselor determines that the client is able to make healthy decisions without excessive guidance and is emotionally ready end counseling services as well. I believe it is a counselor’s responsibility to aim for a positive termination of services from the beginning of treatment. Kress & Marie, 2019 state that ethically it is a counselor’s duty to prepare clients for the counseling termination process and the services when they are no longer needed therefore, counselors should be thinking about termination from eve the first session.
How can you assess your own readiness for termination?
Similarly, if feel that as a client one self-examines and determines if the originally set therapy goals have been met. Check what the emotional state is; evaluate the coping strategies that are in place and if they are being effective for me as an individual or not. I would assess my own self-awareness and understanding of my strengths and weaknesses and consider what my support system is and how I can depend on them.
