Instructions: Recall in the Week 2 discussion you were asked to select a topic area, identify a problem associated with it, and apply a set of problem-solving steps to generate a solution. For this assignment, you will do the following:
Identify a different topic area from the same list and write a brief description of what it is and what it’s for. That list again:

State whether you feel it is either more beneficial or more detrimental to society,
Write a 500-700 word argument to support and defend your statement (this will require doing research to identify credible evidence). That is, write an argument that presents specific reasons to support your thesis (your position on whether it is more beneficial or more detrimental).
Next, you will critically evaluate your own presentation and argument using a set of 23 questions (see below). You will use all of these questions as a “checklist” to evaluate your argument. Depending on the question, your response might be just one word, or a brief sentence – keep it that short!). Include your responses in your assignment.
Based upon your responses, write a 200-250 word summary of your evaluative assessment of your presentation and argument. You may want to identify strengths and weaknesses and describe why you have identified those. Or, you may want to reflect on what you left out or what you could have done differently to be more effective in your analysis argument. In other words, “How did I do?”
Specific Assignment Format and Requirements
- Title page
- Pages 2-4: topic selection and description/definition; your statement of whether you feel it is more beneficial or more detrimental to society; your argument to support and defend your statement.
- Pages 5 +: Brief responses (a word, phrase, or sentence) to each of the 23 questions, and a brief evaluative summary of your presentation and argument.
- References page
Use APA format for the title page, spacing, font size, margins, page numbering, in-text citations, and references.
Intellectual Standards Questions for Your Critical Evaluation:
Clarity (well-defined, explicit, unambiguous, straightforward, obvious, transparent, lucid)
- Is my argument easy to follow?
- Did I explain myself well?
- Did I write clearly?
Accuracy (correct, factual, verifiable, reliable, certain, valid)
- Is what I am saying correct?
- Is the information reliable?
Precision (exact, detailed, specific, methodical)
- Does my language convey exactly what I’m thinking?
- Can I present the problem and my argument more completely?
- Have I used the best words to present my thoughts?
Relevance and Significance (pertinent, fitting, important, useful, essential, applicable)
- Is everything I have written important to making the point?
- Did I focus on the essential aspects?
- Did I cover only what was necessary to my argument?
Depth (thorough, complex, profound, robust, multifaceted, powerful)
- Is my argument thorough?
- Have I discussed everything I need to?
- Did I include enough details to support my argument?
Breadth (comprehensive, viewpoints, perspectives)
- How might others address the problem?
- Are alternative perspectives considered and reasoned through?
Logic (rational, reasonable, consistent, coherent, convincing)
- Does my argument make sense?
- Is there sufficient reasoning to make my point?
- Is my thinking consistent?
- Do my conclusions follow from the evidence?
Fairness (impartial, balanced, dispassionate, neutral, just, unbiased, objective, evenhanded)
- Is my writing free from bias?
- Was I impartial in presenting the problem and evidence?
- Was I objective in my treatment of alternative perspectives?
When selecting sources to support your argument, it is important to use a set of evaluative criteria to determine credibility and currency, reliability and relevance, authority and accuracy, and purpose and point of view. This is also known as the C.R.A.P. test; it’s a great example of critical inquiry in action!
